What is ZenproÂŽ (omeprazole) used for?

ZenproÂŽ belongs to group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

ZenproÂŽ is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).

ZenproÂŽ may also be given together with antibiotics to treat gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

How should I take ZenproÂŽ (omeprazole)?

ZenproÂŽ is usually taken before eating (at least 1 hour before a meal). Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

ZenproÂŽ should be taken only once every 24 hours for 14 days. Take the medicine in the morning before you eat breakfast. It may take up to 4 days for full effect. Do not take more than one tablet every 24 hours.

Allow at least 4 months to pass before you start another 14-day treatment with ZenproÂŽ. Call your doctor if you have additional symptoms and need treatment before the 4 months has passed.

How do I store ZenproÂŽ (omeprazole)?

ZenproÂŽ is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store ZenproÂŽ in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of ZenproÂŽ that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush ZenproÂŽ down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using ZenproÂŽ (omeprazole)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of ZenproÂŽ or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Heartburn is often confused with the first symptoms of a heart attack. Seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, and a general ill feeling.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to use ZenproÂŽ if you have other medical conditions, especially:

  • Liver disease
  • Low levels of magnesium in your blood
  • Osteoporosis or low bone mineral density (osteopenia)

Do not use ZenproÂŽ without the advice of a doctor if you have:

  • Trouble or pain with swallowing
  • Bloody or black stools, vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds
  • Heartburn that has lasted for over 3 months
  • Frequent chest pain, heartburn with wheezing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea or vomiting, stomach pain

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

  • Clopidogrel
  • Diazepam (Valium)
  • Digoxin
  • Disulfiram (Antabuse)
  • Erlotinib
  • Iron-containing medicines (ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate, and others)
  • Methotrexate
  • Mycophenolate mofetil
  • Phenytoin
  • John’s wort
  • Tacrolimus
  • Warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)
  • An antibiotic–ampicillin, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, rifampin
  • Antifungal medicine–ketoconazole, voriconazole
  • HIV or AIDS medication–atazanavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir

ZenproÂŽ may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

What is the dose of ZenproÂŽ (omeprazole) for an adult?

Usual Adult Dose for Duodenal Ulcer:

20 mg orally once a day before a meal. Most patients heal within 4 to 8 weeks.

Usual Adult Dose for Helicobacter pylori Infection:

Dual therapy: ZenproÂŽ 40 mg orally once a day in the morning plus clarithromycin 500 mg orally 3 times a day on days 1 to 14. Beginning on day 15, ZenproÂŽ 20 mg orally once a day in the morning on days 15 to 28.

Triple therapy: ZenproÂŽ 20 mg plus clarithromycin 500 mg plus amoxicillin 1000 mg all given orally twice a day for 10 days. If an ulcer is present at the initiation of therapy, continue ZenproÂŽ 20 mg orally once a day for an additional 18 days.

Usual Adult Dose for Gastric Ulcer:

40 mg orally once a day before a meal for 4 to 8 weeks.

Usual Adult Dose for Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:

Initial: 60 mg orally once a day. Dosage should be individualized to patient’s needs.

Maintenance: doses up to 120 mg 3 times a day have been administered. Daily doses greater than 80 mg should be divided.

What is the dose of ZenproÂŽ (omeprazole) for a child?

Usual Pediatric Dose for Erosive Esophagitis:

Infants: GERD: 0.7 mg/kg/dose once daily

Children and Adolescents 1 to 16 years: GERD, ulcers, esophagitis:

  • 5 kg to less than 10 kg: 5 mg once daily
  • 10 kg to less than or equal to 20 kg: 10 mg once daily
  • Greater than 20 kg: 20 mg once daily

Usual Pediatric Dose for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease:

Infants: GERD: 0.7 mg/kg/dose once daily.

Children and Adolescents 1 to 16 years: GERD, ulcers, esophagitis:

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of ZenproÂŽ, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
